[Return to "Reception and Criticism" Overview]
An online transcript of this (otherwise unpublished) contribution to "All the Year Round" can be found on the website of Thomas Larque: http://shakespearean.org.uk/. It summarises the contents of the 1608 English naration based on the Hamblet saga as rendered by Bandello and in the 1559 "Histoires tragiques," contrasts the core characteristics of that text with those of Shakespeare's play, and gives an overview of the various stage interpretations of the play up to and including the 1870s.
